While the center class next season could be very strong, the power forward class certainly has less depth. Leading this position is Jonathan Kuminga, who has been one of the most consistent big men the league has seen since he came into the league in 2022. While his value has seemingly dropped in recent years due to his turnover problem and lack of playoff success, Kuminga has continued to be a force on the boards and in the paint, leading to his 705 career double-doubles. The Cavaliers will almost certainly either trade him this season or lose him in free agency next season as they pulled off a puzzling cutback move to free up cap space to sign 5th-year guard Naoki Uto. Teams who are in need of a veteran big who can rebound and defend will likely offer Kuminga another large contract; the question is whether he can finally find a spot where he can thrive statistically and win a championship.

Entering a contract season, Wayne Chism will look to capitalize on a potentially weak PF market and sign a large, long-term deal. Although known for his loyalty and having vocalized wanting to stay in Boston, Chism has also made it clear he wants to play for a contender, as he is currently in the middle of his prime. The former #1 overall pick hasn’t exactly met his draft day standards, but he has certainly developed into a solid pro, providing defense and offensive versatility that is highly valued nowadays. While he doesn’t shoot 3s at a high volume, he is certainly a threat from out there, forcing defenses to push out further than they are comfortable with. If Chism decides to test the waters, expect teams to offer hefty four-year contracts to help solidify their frontcourt.

Somewhat of a hidden player, as he did not play a single minute for a stacked Seattle team last season, Terrence Jennings comes in #3 on this list. The reason for this is that he has shown flashes of his defensive ability, both guarding the post and coming up with weak-side blocks. In the preseason, Jennings played a large role off the bench and played well behind the twin-towers of Fabricio Oberto and newly signed C.J. Walker. While we don’t know yet how Seattle will allocate his minutes in the regular season, Jennings still presents a solid, second-tier, defensive-minded big that contending teams will likely be interested in. Expect him to attract MLE-type money, but I wouldn’t be surprised if an up-and-coming team offered him an overpay due to him being just 27 years of age.

Remember when Jaxson Hayes was an elite shot blocker? Pepperidge Farms does…but now he’s a completely different player, as he has become less effective on defense, but has become a very effective offensive player, relying mostly on rim runs and lobs. The 35-year old big man out of Texas is making his second stint in Dallas, but will probably be on a new team come next season due to him not having any bird years. Going into his 17th year next season, time will tell if Hayes will hang them up, but he certainly seems to have a lot left in the tank. If he does decide to continue playing, expect him to receive large one to two-year deals from contenders looking to shore up their frontcourt.

Gary Trent will be re-entering free agency next season as he signed a 1-year/$20million contract with the Nets this season. Trent will likely be looking for a more long-term deal and has made it known teams better bring out the Brinks truck for him come next year. Time will tell if any team will actually be desperate enough to pay a borderline starting big man the money he thinks he deserves. On what’s likely to be a lottery-bound Nets team, Trent will either play big minutes next to youngsters Garrick Sherman and Cady Lalanne, or be shipped off for youth and/or picks to a contender that can afford his $20M cap hit. Either way, expect teams to offer him anywhere from $10M - $15M/year for his defensive prowess.
