BSL Round Table: 2020 Off-Season

On Free Agency:
If you could land two free agents from this class, guaranteed, who would you pick? Why?

Username (Bucks GM):
"Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler. Two of the best defensive players in the whole file, very good on the offensive end as well and they also rebound a lot for their position. They’d fit in great with Giannis and Bledsoe in MKE if I had cap room."

The Godfather (Pelicans GM):
"Khawi and Kyrie... Those 2 added to my Roster and 75 wins might be possible..."

NCツ (Hawks GM):

"For me it would be Kawahi Leonard or Jaylen Brown. My team struggled to get consistent scoring from the perimeter last season and both these guys could make immediate impacts. I list Kawahi because he is easily the best free agent available that is a perfect fit for my team. I also list Brown because his home town is Atlanta and it would be cool to bring him home."

Cloud (Clippers GM):
"I know everyone's going to say Kawhi, but that's not realistic for most teams, so I'm going to answer this as realistically as possible from my teams vantage point. If I could sign any 2 realistic free agents in this class to help build my team moving forward, I'd like Domas Sabonis and Ben Simmons. Both young guys who fit the timeline for the future, but could also come in and help us start to change the culture right off the bat. Sabonis is such a unique looking big man and would be incredibly fun to have, and Simmons is a versatile weapon that gives you different looks at the 1 - 4 in the starting lineup, and at worst is a perennial 6moty threat if you play him backup at every position. I'm not sure Simmons or Sabonis fit the mold of "winning fbb players" but they'd present a unique challenge and I'm all about that."

Donkey (Raptors GM):
"Pretty obvious here, if you don't pick Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler you're a certified moron. They're by far the two best players in this free agent class, both are at nine years experience so neither will garner the enormous max salary starting at $35,654,150 each. Instead you'd be paying $61,121,400 for the pair. It's a little under half the cap for two players but it's well worth it. Both players are capable of scoring 20+ points per game and both are considered elite defenders. Not to mention both are low turnover players which is just another reason that they're so valuable. If you were able to get those two, on even an empty team, it'd be easy to fill in the rest of the pieces with decent starters and decent role players and immediately contend for a title. Luckily this is just a theoretical and it probably won't happen and I can hopefully bring back Kawhi to pair with the better player in Durant."

AIR (Suns GM):
"In the case of my team, I would want to land Kawhi Leonard and Kyrie Irving. We have holes right now at both spots and both guys would be instant upgrades and would allow for us to start our winning process. Kawhi Leonard gives us a legit 2 way player who would help this team defensively in many ways. Kyrie next to Booker would be great offensively. We might be the worst defensive team though."

The Jon (Warriors GM):
"The two big free agents in this class are Kawhi Leonard and Kyrie Irving. If it were possible to sign both, you could field a championship team with just these 2 and a bunch of shitty roleplayers. They are both superstars. It's been proven in fbb that 2 stars can definitely carry a team of scrubs to a title. That being said, I'd be shocked if either guy left their current teams."

G9. (Mavericks GM):
"I've got to go with Kawhi Leonard and Domantas Sabonis here. The reasons for Kawhi are obvious, the reasons for Domantas, perhaps less so. Important to note that Sabonis is only 24 years old, while some of the other star free agents in this class are much older. He's got a well-rounded skill set, a strong frame, top tier rebounding, and the ability to play three positions (C, PF, SF). Give me a lineup of Vernon Carey - Domantas Sabonis - Kawhi Leonard - Malik Monk and I'll find a way to win some games. Even if those two and my current roster can't, I'm confident I could use them as selling pieces to bring in assets I would be more happy with."

What are your favorite and least favorite BSL Free Agency memories?

Username (Bucks GM):
Favorite: "I don’t think I’ve ever stolen any premier players but it’s always great when your star players come back and you sign a few additional role players 😭😭"

Least Favorite: "KD left me year one 2 leagues ago."

The Godfather (Pelicans GM):
Favorite and Least Favorite: "Losing Webb to Donkey..Best and Worst all in one..Best because it shows that anything is possible in FA and Worst because I lost a Star. "

NCツ (Hawks GM):

Favorite: "My favorite BSL memory was maxing this player Mikhail Kuligan who barely played in his first four seasons. He had a ton of fringes and so I took the gamble on him. I signed him and his former GM Rose roasted me for a solid month about signing that "bum." Kuligan went on to blow up for me because he still had 70+ pot after his rookie contract and was a franchise centerpiece for my team for almost ten seasons, I want to say his prime was something like C+ A C A C as a shooting guard. Rose later informed me the
reason he roasted me was that he was salty I stole him from his team lol."

Least Favorite: "
Accidentally signing Danny Green to a 2 year contract last season, I thought my bid was a 1 year deal. I lost out on an extra 20 mil in cap space this year and refuse to PM Panic for CUTBACKS."

Cloud (Clippers GM):
Favorite: "Beats maxing that random leftover free agent because of his scouted pot was pretty good."

Least Favorite: "
Last league when I stole RJ Barrett. Despite it being a massive move that should've been extremely exciting, it was ruined by a few circle-jerk crybabies who then tried to destroy the league from that point forward."

Donkey (Raptors GM):
Favorite: "My favorite memory, a lot of you weren't around here for, but it was when CP3MVP was still the commissioner. It was just my second league in BSL, the first I had joined in pretty late, and I had the Bulls and was pretty mediocre. One free agency though I put a max offer out for a stud named Brannen Greene. He didn't light the world up or anything but he was a really good all-star caliber player. He happened to be on CP3MVP's team too, so you'd think the chances of him walking were low right? Well he ended up walking, and he signed with me that off-season. He turned into a phenomenal player too, he went from an all-star level talent to an MVP level talent pretty quickly. He led my team to 50+ wins year after year. It never resulted in a ring but that was one of my most fun teams led by one of my favorite all time BSL players."

Least Favorite: "For me it would have to be a couple leagues ago where Cloud stole Bryce Dejean-Jones from me. I was in cap hell, like I am currently, and tried to get cute with my offer. I offered a regular max and somehow Cloud was able to steal him away from me. If I remember correctly, on a good team he was around 20 points per game and he was a pretty great, maybe even elite, defender. I know that at the time I had a really good team and I could afford to take the blow, but losing a player of that caliber and getting nothing in return is pretty rough. If memory serves me, it was also the beginning of the end for that team. That was just the first thing to go wrong and it all kind of snowballed from there."

AIR (Suns GM):
Favorite: "I don't recall stealing away any "stars" from free agency. I would go WAY back in which we signed Casper Ware for the minimum. He went on to be a 20/7 point guard who averaged like one turnover a game. Another guy would be Miles Bridges in one league where he was decent with ratings like B- B+ scoring and ended up going B A- after free agency and became a pretty good scorer."

Least Favorite: "Least favorite was whenever I lost one of my better players. Panic stole Dusty Hannahs from me one year. Another least favorite moment of mine was when we resigned Jamal Bey for a max deal. He was young, with potential but probably was the only player with D- ratings (in handles/rebounding), but his scoring always looked good."

The Jon (Warriors GM):
Favorite: "Signing Tolga Gecim away from Panic after he won a title was hands down the best and most hilarious thing that's happened to me in fbb. Young, allstar PG with elite defense and I got him for free. Good times."

Least Favorite: "Losing Obi Enechionyia to Cavs for literally a couple dollars difference. He went on to become a stud big with high blocks. Would have definitely had more rings had he resigned with me."

G9. (Mavericks GM):
Favorite and Least Favorite: "Unfortunately I don't have any tall tales of thievery or trickery. I try my best to avoid free agent mishaps or dependencies. Like that Carlton meme. Points to forehead: can't fuck up free agency if you don't participate. Would be cool to someday get a high win rating and just mess around and try to snag someone though. I imagine it would be nice to gain a player for free, especially in a tough league like this. Donkey's bidding system makes things a little more interesting it seems like."

Stays or Leaves?

Username (Bucks GM):
Kawhi Leonard, Raptors: stays
Jimmy Butler, 76ers: leaves
Draymond Green, Celtics: leaves
Ben Simmons, 76ers: stays
Julius Randle, Nets: stays
Domantas Sabonis, Pacers: stays
Jaylen Brown, Celtics: stays
Kyrie Irving, Celtics: stays

The Godfather (Pelicans GM):
Kawhi Leonard, Raptors: leaves
Jimmy Butler, 76ers: stays
Draymond Green, Celtics: awful leaves
Ben Simmons, 76ers: role player leaves
Julius Randle, Nets: not worth it leaves
Domantas Sabonis, Pacers: stays if Maxed
Jaylen Brown, Celtics: leaves someone will offer more and if Celts Max well they are just dumb
Kyrie Irving, Celtics: stays but cripples the cap and will age fast

NCツ (Hawks GM):

Kawhi Leonard, Raptors: Stays
Jimmy Butler, 76ers: Stays
Draymond Green, Celtics: Leaves
Ben Simmons, 76ers: Leaves
Julius Randle, Nets: Leaves
Domantas Sabonis, Pacers: Stays
Jaylen Brown, Celtics: Stays
Kyrie Irving, Celtics: Stays

Cloud (Clippers GM):
Kawhi Leonard, Raptors: 100% staying
Jimmy Butler, 76ers: Gone, foreman showed his hand by asking if anyone wanted a S&T
Draymond Green, Celtics: Staying
Ben Simmons, 76ers: Staying, unless foreman gets cute with some decreases in his offer, which is very possible
Julius Randle, Nets: I see him leaving, should be a hot commodity
Domantas Sabonis, Pacers: Probably staying but it's going to take a max and that's super tough for the Pacers to do financially
Jaylen Brown, Celtics: Leaving, I see him getting a snipe deal elsewhere
Kyrie Irving, Celtics: Staying, boston knows they have a good thing going with Kyrie and Beal

Donkey (Raptors GM):
Kawhi Leonard, Raptors:
Stays, why would he leave a good situation?
Jimmy Butler, 76ers: Stays, he'll get maxed and he's in a good spot.
Draymond Green, Celtics: Leaves, he's a good candidate to get overpaid.
Ben Simmons, 76ers: Leaves, I don't think the 76ers need him or can afford to overpay him.
Julius Randle, Nets: Leaves, the Nets can't win with his B- defense.
Domantas Sabonis, Pacers: Stays, I think Beats will pony-up (overpay) to keep him.
Jaylen Brown, Celtics: Leaves, his production isn't their with the Celtics and he isn't worth a max.
Kyrie Irving, Celtics: Stays, he's in a good spot and should get a full max.

AIR (Suns GM):
Kawhi Leonard, Raptors - Toronto will max, so he will stay.
Jimmy Butler, 76ers - Leaves. 76ers have to bring back Simmons AND Butler. One has to go.
Draymond Green, Celtics - Stays. Won't be maxed, but they should be able to get him back due to 5th year.
Ben Simmons, 76ers - Stays, only if Philly makes him a priority over Butler
Julius Randle, Nets - Stays on a 1 year max from Nets.
Domantas Sabonis, Pacers - Leaves. I do see a few teams throwing him a max contract.
Jaylen Brown, Celtics - Leaves. Another young player who will probably get maxed. Boston would rather resign Kyrie/Draymond.
Kyrie Irving, Celtics - Stays. Boston will pay him.

The Jon (Warriors GM):
Kawhi Leonard, Raptors: Stays
Jimmy Butler, 76ers: Leaves
Draymond Green, Celtics: Leaves
Ben Simmons, 76ers: Leaves
Julius Randle, Nets: Stays
Domantas Sabonis, Pacers: Stays
Jaylen Brown, Celtics: Leaves
Kyrie Irving, Celtics: Stays

G9. (Mavericks GM):
Kawhi Leonard, Raptors: Stays. Donkey will give him the full-max, deservedly so. An absolute game changer and worst case scenario he's got good trade value.
Jimmy Butler, 76ers: Leaves. Foreman always gets cute with his bids it seems.
Draymond Green, Celtics: Leaves. Either the Celtics don't know it's free agency or they have no idea what to pay this man.
Ben Simmons, 76ers: Leaves. Foreman and his cuteness. Somebody is going to top dollar lil' Ben.
Julius Randle, Nets: Stays. Scott will give him a shorter, but larger contract than most other teams are willing to bid.
Domantas Sabonis, Pacers: Stays. But Beats' has to max him. Max and invest. Just make him a key part of the 'chise.
Jaylen Brown, Celtics: Leaves. Similar situation as Draymond Green.
Kyrie Irving, Celtics: Stays. If Celtics GM sent bids, he'll have maxed Kyrie.
