If you submitted a DC you can answer the following question and receive $3M.

What would you propose to stop tanking in the NBA (or BSL)?

I think ditching the lotto in favor of just normal inverted standings might work. Or moving lotto odds back to favoring the team with the worst record. Getting rid of the draft as a whole would ruin the sport tbh.

Flat odds for lotto and selecting top 8 picks, that way your aren’t guaranteed a top pick

-Flattening of the draft lottery odds
-Salary Cap Floor
-Can't pick in the top 4-5 back to back years
-Some sort of coaching / camping restriction

Not all of those but some ideas

I’ve always said we should earn more cash for having competitive teams.

Should be more perks for winning. Not sure exactly how that can be drawn up effectively here but being able to dump all your players and become a ghost for a few seasons is just way too easy

Reduce lotto to equal odds for worst four teams.
Can’t participate in the lotto two consecutive years.
Eliminate pick protections.

Do tanking teams currently lose cash? Could definitely also be implemented

Default pick options to Lottery Protection, No Protection and Swap Option; As opposed to Top 3, Top 5, etc to avoid tanking for keeping a pick.

No cash per sim, instead take the 15M from each team and put it all in a pool. Payouts are awarded to teams based on regular season success. Tanking teams finish with less than half of the cash that winning teams receive.

IMO, this is how they solve it in real life. Take 10% of each players game check for every single game and award that is entire sum to the winning team each game

healthy scratch max players like AD and Trae Young will be giving up $80K everytime they sit and their team loses. See if players still want to tank. They won’t.

I like the idea of more cash for certain thresholds of success both sustained or seasons individually, and I like the idea of penalizing bad teams with cash reductions and worse odds

Any change to the lotto will just change how tanking works. Any change to renoving the draft entirely just punishes small market teams because players would only go there for the money. Think the only way to make an impact is impacting the players for missed games/missed minutes in games

Flattening lotto odds is probably one of the better ideas. Another idea that I remember someone saying that was pretty out there is to having a single elimination tournament between the lotto teams. So whoever wins get the best picks. Would promote competitiveness.

^ Agreed. It’s getting a lot of attention right now because everyone going hard for AJ/Petterson/Boozer but only a problem when it takes money out of gamblers hands lol.

Not allowing teams to consecutively pick in the top 4 after letting San Antonio ride would ruin some parity down the road.

only thing I don’t like are healthy scratches or not playing someone the entire second half. Best players should be getting 30+ minutes if they are healthy

I don't think there's a solution. But something like a salary floor may help. That would force teams to either a) roster quality players or b) have larger salaries to match for trades.

Most wins after getting eliminated for playoff contention will have the highest odds

I like the idea of less cash reward or decreased odds for the following draft if you've gotten a high pick the previous draft.

Lottery odds for next draft lock at the trade deadline instead of the end of the season. Forces “tanking” teams to make a decision of selling earlier in the season and gets rid of the incentive for tanking games down the stretch of the season and actual invites competition as guys future playing time / coaches tenure is on the line and they can play without strings attached

In BSL, teams that miss playoffs are assigned a win-rating for that season. Between sim 6 and playoffs, during re-signings, we have a 'lotto FA' period where those 13 teams bid on draft players as if it is free agency already for them, with win-rating playing a slightly larger impact than I think it does now (or maybe keep that the same, not sure).

I think this strikes a good balance between asking teams to compete and minimizing the rewards of completely bottoming out.

The team that barely misses playoffs was likely trying to compete, shouldn't have a ton of cap, but will have the best win-rating. They get to hopefully add a decent player at a decent contract. Or maybe they planned really well and were better than expected but are still one big piece away. They get their chance to bid on that piece and get over the hump instead of drafting some 18 yo pot boost lotto ticket at 13 ovr and repeating the same mediocrity next year.

The team that had worst record should have the most cap. Maybe they can do some damage to it; but maybe nobody wants to come there.

Gets tricky when you start to consider traded picks though. Say a championship winning team near HC owns the odds to "#1 ovr." What do they get? Idk.

Lotto odds lock at all star break to prevent teams from tanking 2nd half. Also if u get a top 5 pick u cant get another one back to back years

I still think it’s necessary in some form to give bad teams an opportunity to improve, since it’s hard in FA with a low win rating. I see the bigger issue as being teams intentionally setting bad DCs to lose, and having a top 5 pick despite not being that bad.

I’d make a few changes
- if you wanna tank, you must register pre season and have CPU set your DC and cut scrubs and replace with the best LFA players. If you win <30 games without registering, you forfeit your pick (or it becomes 14 at best)
- if you get a top 3 or top 5 pick, you can’t again for another 3 seasons. IMO tanking hard for one season isn’t a big deal, but it’s obnoxious when a team gets 3 top 5 picks in a row
