Redrafting the Sim

I went about this two ways, I played and played, and then played some more on two formulas, one for bigs and one for perimeter players that amplified values for key categories relative to the position and included for the first time, a rating directly related to potential, age, versatility (ability to play multiple positions) and contract value relative to overall value. 730

I will say that the formula is obviously not perfect and probably still too kind to point guards, too hard on small forwards. I also think it’s apparent that when you scroll to the bottom and see the whole chart, this league is hurting for star big men.

While there is a small value adjustment for players on fortuitous contracts, there was no penalty for players who are on bad deals or cutback (I.e. Rodman) which is probably something that should be included in a future edition.

I included all 30 names in the poll and 30 other names I found interesting or that were league leaders in one stat category or another.

The other way involved crowd sourcing a poll and having you guys walk through 30 names, to select the top 10, supposing that we were redrafting the league and everyone was in one pool. (I had 20 people fill out the poll, so it was a nice range of answers.)

The Results

Based on my findings, I felt like the clear top three were Jones, Lucio, and Artis in essentially no order. The attention the formula places on youth and potential is basically the reason Jones sits above the other two.

The biggest disagreement between the poll and my formula is Dell Curry. Curry who almost stole #1 away from Artis found himself penalized by the formula for a couple of reasons but actually fell all the way to 14.

Moser (10) and Cuello (8) who both made the crowd sourced poll both missed and found themselves 24th and 17th respectively according to the formula.

Apologies if I missed anyone who you would like to have seen.
