NC's 2033 Draft Notes
Didn't want to reveal my hand before the draft, but with the draft class getting released early this year (shout out to Donkey) I had the opportunity to take a deep dive into scouting it. Here are some of my notes, MAPLESCOUTING rankings, and opinions on our most recent class.
This is a close look of what MAPLESCOUTING looks like. Numbers on the left indicate ranking based off their MAPLESCOUTING Score.
Can do it all, best player in the draft in my opinion. Great wings are hard to come by and he has the base and pot to become great. Do worry about volume and turnovers.
Could argue as #1 overall, I would only want to see him taken by a proven GM that can put together a competitive inside/balanced roster. In the right situation he could be elite. My biggest concern is he'll shoot to many 3's inefficiently.
Three low fringes, but he is 18 so I don't see it as being an issue. Hudson is a high volume wing scorer, reminds me of a better Bernard King from a ways back. Hopefully he doesn't shoot too many 3's like I mentioned with Bing.
Inefficient scorer in college, but looks like a top 5 pick. Good pot and floor. Safe pick imo but not gonna be a stud unless he has some strong TC's in the right areas.
Has the pot to become really good, worry about his volume though. Think his ceiling might be a more balanced scoring Emoni Bates. I struggled finding a reason to love or hate this prospect.
Good enough assist numbers in college for me to believe he can move to point guard and develop there as a true point. Really strong floor, and good potential.
3 super fringes, elite in 2 categories, and 18 years old. Should have good volume as well. I like Cazzie more than Lou.
Marshall has 3 low fringes but good pot and a good starting base. Don't believe he'll have volume so i'm not high on him.
MAPLESCOUTING has him below Marshall, I would personally rather have Bogic. Euro stats suggest he could put great A:TO numbers and volume. Pot is mediocre so these first 2 TC's will be critical for him.
Jones to me seems like at best he'll become a less efficient Matt Bouldin. The Pot is there for him to develop, I just am not a fan of his floor even with that pot. I hope i'm wrong @beats
13 Sam Dower C 6'9'' 240 22 B- B- D- C C 5 43
I see one of 3 things happening with Dower. 1) He becomes Joonas Caven, OG's remember how great he was. That's best case scenario. Worst case scenario 2) The super low fringe D- handles is an indicator of low volume and he fails to develop his def/reb leaving him as a sub par stretch 4 who wasted a ton of pot. Most likely scenario in my opinion 3) is he becomes Kristaps Porzingas. Good scorer who floats around B-/B def/reb at best. Zingas is cool, but never really thrives in FBB, i'm hoping for the Joonas result.
17 Walt Wesley C 6'11'' 220 17 B- C- D- C- C+ 3 41.8
Fitting that the 17 year old came up at #17 overall in MAPLESCOUTING. Has the pot and the base to blow up, but is definitely a project for now. Worry about his pot tanking, with probably 90ish pot now there are 3 chances it could take a massive drop.
19 J'Covan Brown PG 6'1'' 197 23 C B C C+ C- 80 41.3
Doesn't have good pot, but his base is very strong. Would be a nice snag for a contending team. Could be C+ B+ C+ B- C- after just 1 TC
Has the 10th best pot and basically has B shooting. Defense needs a lot of work so hopefully the pot helps him out. 36% 3 point shooter in college
32 Kyle Hardrick PF 6'7'' 233 23 C+ C D- B- C+ 69 38.95
Below average pot but a solid base. Will probably be able to contribute as rotational big man immediately. Won't ever be great, but should be solid for awhile. Just another Yoeli Childs, EJ Montgomery, Dedric Lawson type of guy. Could be fools gold as well, he only played only 17 minutes total in college.
58 Henry Akin C 6'10'' 225 18 C+ C- F+ C C 29 36.5
Very Raw, but 18 so could blow up. Starting pot isn't terrible either... top 30. Almost gave a second round grade but I doubt he'll make it there. Most likely will need that non lotto full DLG.
Here is a list of some guys I expected to fall into the second round and wanted to target.
22 Jack Marin SF 6'7'' 200 18 C+ C- C- C C 27 41.2
Based on NBA stats he could have an elite jump shot, and Marin is also a former top 5 pick out of Duke. Being 18 makes him worth the gamble in the 2nd round
37 Klemen Prepelic SG 6'3'' 170 20 C B C C- D+ 56 38.1
High volume scorer in Europe, I'd move him to PG and hope his handles develop and he can improve his defense over time. Will need to use all of his average pot to become successful
38 Carlos Toussaint SG 6'3'' 175 22 C C+ C C C- 89 38
Low Pot but good fringes, could be a quick developer like Roman Rubenshteyn and go +3 this first TC.
Brock had volume in the post in college and is a more than capable 3 point shooter. Could develop into a solid role player at SF I believe. Low potential but I like his base.
48 Mark McLaughlin SG 6'6'' 195 23 C B- D+ C C 90 37.25
Shitty Pot but I think he could have serious volume at PG in a Greeme type system. Mark scored 23 ppg in college as a D2 hooper.
