1. Per out formula, there are two teams tied a top the league. The defending champions San Antonio Spurs and the up-and-coming Los Angeles Lakers find themselves in the 'contender' category after the first sim of the season. The Spurs appear to be a much more rounded team as they lead the league in net rating, are third in point differential, fifth in turnover differential, sixth in effective field goal differential and seventh in rebounding differential. After all, they're the defending champions for a reason. The Lakers actually lead the league in all three of point differential, effective field goal differential and turnover differential. They are also fifth in net rating. If there is a weak spot to this young squad its rebounding as they currently rank 19th in the league in rebounding differential. The following power rankings are developed via a formula constructed of point differential, rebounding differential, effective field goal differential, turnover differential and net rating. 2. The Charlotte Hornets and Sacramento Kings round on the 'contender' tier following the first time of the season. Although these two teams rank similarly, they do so in different ways. The Hornets are third in the league in both turnover differential and net rating, fifth in point differential and seventh in effective field goal differential. Like the Lakers, the Hornets' downfall is their rebounding as they rank 18th in rebounding differential. On the opposite side, the Kings are the best in the league when it comes to rebounding differential. They are also second in effective field goal differential and fourth in point differential. Their downfalls come to the tune of a 12th ranking in net rating, which isn't bad, and a 18th rating in turnover differential. If the Hornets can find some more rebounding and the Kings can limit their turnovers, they could be better squads.
3. The Atlanta Hawks come in as the only team in the 'fringe contender' tier. The Hawks are a very good rebounding team as they are second to just the Kings in rebounding differential. They are also sixth in point differential and turnover differential and are ninth in net rating. Their downfall is their effective field goal differential as they rank 18th. They're getting points, but not in an effective nature. Can that withstand the season?
4. The Phoenix Suns are the lone team in the 'playoff team' tier. They sure are an interesting one as they rank third in effective field goal differential, eighth in point differential, tenth in turnover differential and 11th in net rating but are also 22nd in rebounding differential. This team really needs to find some rebounding help.
5. We have six teams in the 'on the bubble' tier. These are the Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trailblazers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks. The Bucks are a very good scoring and rebounding team as they rank second in point differential and they are also third in rebounding differential. Their red flags come with a 19th placement in turnover differential and 23rd in net rating. The Trailblazers are rather well rounded without a major bright spot to highlight. Their best placement is seventh in effective field goal differential and their lowest is 16th in turnover differential. The Cavaliers are fourth in turnover differential and seventh in point differential but also rank 22nd in effective field goal differential and 27th in net rating. The Boston Celtics will rise these rankings in due time but as of right now they rank fourth in effective field goal differential and sixth in rebounding differential but also rank 20th in net rating and 25th in turnover differential. The Utah Jazz's top placement is eighth in turnover differential and their lowest is a tie for 16th in all three of rebounding differential, effective field goal differential and net rating. The Mavericks don't have a single placement in single digits but their lowest is 21st in net rating.
