I got bored at work so I made this ranking of the 25 best players under 25 years old. It's only based on stats, so defense might be undervalued, and potential/age is not part of the equation.
Here's my formula :
PPG*TS%*2+RPG*1,6+(APG-TOPG)*1,8+SPG*1,5+BPG
Also, players over 20pts or 10rbds or 5asts get bonuses. It's a formula I used for real NBA history purposes, so it's not perfectly adapted to this league.
OK, let's move on to the rankings.
*** STARTER LEVEL ***
25. Domantas SABONIS (PF/Warriors)
Stats : 14.3pts, 10.8rbds, 1.0bcks, 1.0stls, .435 FG%, .458 3P%
Sabonis numbers are quite disappointing : worst scoring and FG% in his career, low rebounding for his standards. Still a good starter who can shoot this occasional three, but he's paid an awful lot for that.
24. Michael PORTER JR (SF/Celtics)
Stats : 17.5pts, 6.7rbds, 3.8asts, 1.5stls, .459 FG%, .387 3P%
MPJ is having a breakout season with his scoring finally rising. He's a very solid starter with a pretty nice defense and overall abilities. And he's gonna get a HUGE contrat in FA if he goes there.
23. Vernon CAREY (PF/Jazz)
Stats : 19.5pts, 9.1rbds, .478 FG%, .463 3P%
I was quite surprised that Carey was not ranked higher, but again age and potential are not taken into account, and he has some flaws less (handles, blocking). Other than that, he's a terrific sophomore on his way for a 20-10 career with a knack for occasional threes.
22. Marvin BAGLEY JR (PF/Kings)
Stats : 17.3pts, 10.8rbds, .429 FG%, .361 3P%
Bagley looks a lot like Carey, with the same issues. Bagley is a better rebounder but he had a very poor shooting season. Is he still getting a massive salary this summer ? Of course.
21. Zion WILLIAMSON (PF/Spurs)
Stats : 13.9pts, 10.0rbds, 2.7bcks, 1.8stls, .420 FG%, .245 3P%
Zion is so weird. His ratings (A- C+ C B+ B) are perfect. His defensive stats are unbelievable. But his scoring went down every year since he joined the league! Not sure there's a good explanation, but I'm not worried. In 2-3 years he's the best inside player around here.
20. John COLLINS (C/Hawks)
Stats : 13.8pts, 12.3rbds, 1.5bcks, .415 FG%, .382 3P%
Collins was an All Star and a All League 3rd Teamer last year. He got a full max in FA, but he's been kinda disappointing since. His rebounding is great, his defense is solid, but his scoring dropped a lot in the last two years. And his shooting is not good either. The Hawks are really good though.
19. Jaden SPRINGER (SF/Nets)
Stats : 21.6pts, 6.6rbds, 3.1asts, 1.2stls, .439 FG%, .399 3P%
Springer is the highest-ranked rookie, and it's well deserved. Of course the Nets are terrible (they won 7 games out of 57) but he's scoring a lot while contributing in every domain, and his shooting is very interesting.
18. Bam ADEBAYO (PF/Kings)
Stats : 14.6pts, 11.4rbds, 1.4bcks, 1.1stls, .431 FG%
Bam is exactly what his ratings show. He's a great rebounder and a very solid defender. He does not get that many blocks, but eh. Also, he's a better scorer than he should. But then, he will never be a star, and he's paid star money.
17. Ben SIMMONS (SF/76ers)
Stats : 13.2pts, 7.5asts, 6.0rbds, 1.8stls, .483 FG%
Simmons numbers are strangely similar to what they were in the league's first season three years ago (13.0pts, 7.9asts, 6.3rbds, 1.5stls), when he was only 22. Not much of a progress, but he was named to the All-League 3rd Team last year, and few PG are better defenders/ballhandlers.
16. Jonathan ISAAC (PF/Rockets)
Stats : 16.5pts, 10.5rbds, 1.6bcks, .463 FG%, .455 3P%
Isaac was widely overpaid last summer, when he got a max contract after a 6pts-8rbds season. The Rockets thought that Isaac could rise to at least 15-10 in an outside offense, and they were right. Isaac is a very solid defender and a terrific shooter, but he's still overpaid.
15. Trae YOUNG (PG/Nets)
Stats : 16.2pts, 8.6asts, 1.5stls, .448 FG%, .431 3P%
Trae should not be ranked that high, but his terrible defense (outside of steals) and the Nets record (7-50) are not taken into account. He's a great passer (6th in the league) but he loses way too many balls (4.4tos). Great shooter, but not the scorer he was two years ago.
14. Lonzo BALL (PG/Mavericks)
Stats : 10.2pts, 9.4asts, 5.9rbds, 2.4stls, .444 FG%
Ball can't score or even shoot (.301 3P%), but he does everything else perfectly. Great passer (4th in the league) and defender (5th in the league in steals), terrific rebounder for a guard as well. A nice PG for a team who has too many options.
*** ALL STAR LEVEL ***
13. DeAndre AYTON (C/Suns)
Stats : 19.7pts, 11.6rbds, 1.7bcks, 1.0stls, .433 FG%
Ayton was also named to the All-League 3rd Team last year, when he averaged no less than 25.4 points a game! His scoring dropped this season, but he's clearly a 20-10 player who can defend and has low turnovers. Another player about to get maxed in FA.
12. Zach NORVELL (PG/Warriors)
Stats : 23.4pts, 5.3asts, 4.8rbds, 1.8stls, .475 FG%, .456 3P%
Norvell is one of the biggest steals ever, as he was selected in the late second round! He's a terrific scorer, a great shooter, a very good defender.
11. Devin BOOKER (SG/Suns)
Stats : 20.4pts, 7.8asts, 5.7rbds, 1.4stls, .463 FG%, .412 3P%
When the Suns ran fast outside, Booker averaged 28 points per game. Even with all the crazy tactics the Suns imagine to tank, he still is a 20-8 player with great percentages. His defense is meh but he can grab some steals.
10. Arnas VELICKA (PG/Rockets)
Stats : 19.5pts, 7.8asts, 5.1rbds, 2.3stls, .442 FG%, .385 FG%
Velicka is another incredible steal as he was selected in #21. He's a nice passer (10th in the league) and a great defender (6th in the league in steal). The craziest part is that he averages almost 20 points a game, and almost 20 FGA as well, while not being an option!
9. Wendell CARTER JR (PF/Bulls)
Stats : 18.0pts, 10.8rbds, 2.8asts, 2.3bcks, 1.2stls, .474 FG%
What's not to love about WCJ ? Solid rebounder, terrific defender, he can score (he averaged 23.5 points a game two years ago) even in outside, and he's also a good passer! Another no-brainer max in the offseason.
8. Luka DONCIC (SG/Hawks)
Stats : 20.0pts, 8.2asts, 5.8rbds, 1.0stls, .461 FG%, .435 3P%
Sure, Luka is one of the worst defenders in the league and this C- rating seem to be sticking forever. So what ? He's a good scorer, great shooter, solid passer (7th in the league) and an above-average rebounder for his spot. And the Hawks are winning games.
7. Tremont WATERS (PG/Bucks)
Stats : 15.4pts, 10.4asts, 3.2stls, .411 FG%, .324 3P%
Waters is another HUGE steal. He was picked in #27 and played less than 15 minutes in his entire sophomore year, and in his third year he's the third passer in the league, and he grabs more steals than any other player! He's a below-average shooter and can't get any rebound, but still.
6. Jayson TATUM (SF/Bulls)
Stats : 24.7pts, 8.0rbds, 2.5asts, 1.6stls, .477 FG%, .466 3P%
Tatum had some bad critics early in the season, but the Bulls are perfect for him. He's not the franchise player, but a very good second option. He's one of the best shooters in the league as well as a great rebounder for his spot. Sure his defense is meh, but who cares?
5. Tyrese MAXEY (PG/Pistons)
Stats : 23.7pts, 6.7rbds, 6.0asts, 2.2stls, .447 FG%, .384 3P%
Last year, Maxey averaged 27.1 points a game... as a 18yo rookie! His numbers dropped a little this season, but they are still huge for a 19yo player. He's not the greatest passer in the league, but he's a solid defender and rebounder. When he gets a better team than the 13-43 Pistons, his shooting will rise.
*** ALL NBA LEVEL ***
4. Donovan MITCHELL (SG/Mavericks)
Stats : 27.7pts, 6.2rbds, 4.9asts, 2.0stls, .470 FG%, .383 3P%
Mitchell is already a three times All Star, and he's one of the best SG in the league right now. He's such a great scorer - 6th in the league, and check the top five: Harden, Steph, Giannis, AD and KD! But he's also a very solid overall player who can defend, pass the ball and grab some rebounds. Maybe he's not a MVP caliber guy, but he's not that far.
3. Cole ANTHONY (PG/Magic)
Stats : 25.1pts, 7.8asts, 6.1rbds, 1.6stls, .440 FG%, .400 3P%
Every GM survey shows how valuable Anthony looks, and it's not a surprise. He's only 19 and he's in the league Top 10 in both scoring and passing! He's also a very solid defender and a great rebounder for his spot, and he's leading the Magic to the playoffs. The only player who's completely off limits in the league.
2. Ja MORANT (PG/Celtics)
Stats : 23.8pts, 10.6asts, 5.7rbds, 2.0stls, .473 FG%, .425 3P%
Morant is already an All Star, and his numbers are really great. He's a great scorer and a terrific shooter, and he's 2nd in the league in passing. Like Anthony, he's an above-average rebounder, and his steals numbers are great too. Only issue, and it's huge: he loses 5 balls every game!
*** MVP LEVEL ***
1. R.J. BARRETT (SG/Bulls)
Stats : 27.1pts, 9.0asts, 7.0rbds, 2.2stls, .461 FG%, .365 3P%
Barrett was named to the All-League 1st Team last season, and he might very well be the MVP of this season, as he's the best player of the best team. He's 7th in scoring, 5th in passing, 8th in steals, above average in rebounding, great in defense, and he's the franchise player of a 38-15 team. What's left to say?
Here's my formula :
PPG*TS%*2+RPG*1,6+(APG-TOPG)*1,8+SPG*1,5+BPG
Also, players over 20pts or 10rbds or 5asts get bonuses. It's a formula I used for real NBA history purposes, so it's not perfectly adapted to this league.
